Wooden block with metal printing plate depicting logo 'Clarion of Skye and Highland Trader:- Onward Skye! Queen of the West'. Accession Number: hh.4748.27.88 The Clarion of Skye was a monthly newspaper. This was published on the third Friday of the month and edited by Alexander Nicolson from his shop at Struan. He wanted to encourage the people of Skye to make best of the opportunities of their birthplace. As the cover byline proudly read: Onward Skye! Queen of the West. With a circulation eventually reaching a thousand or so as well as the local island sales many copies went out by post each month to 'exiles' and other interested persons around the world. Predating the 1972 birth of the West Highland Free Press in Broadford by some twenty years, The Clarion ran from February 1951 until March 1957, when the illness of the editor brought its run to an end. Used at Holmes McDougall, Edinburgh. Holmes McDougall were educational publishers based at 137 - 141 Leith Walk, Edinburgh. Edinburgh City of Print is a joint project between City of Edinburgh Museums and the Scottish Archive of Print and Publishing History Records (SAPPHIRE). The project aims to catalogue and make accessible the wealth of printing collections held by City of Edinburgh Museums.
