The following is the author's description of the photograph quoted directly from the photograph's Flickr page. "Samuel Hearne, who was a young sailor attached to the Churchill sloop before his Coppermine River venture in 1770, emerged rapidly to prominence with the company after his return from this epic journey. In 1774, he was chosen to lead the expedition to build the first Hudson%u2019s Bay Company trading post inland, this latter decision being a momentous alteration in the trading procedure of the Company. As a result of this journey and also of the second sojourn there in 1775, Hearne was able to lay down in some detail, for the first time, the normal water connections used between York Fort and the Saskatchewan river. Its coverage extends from the Bay at the mouth of the Nelson and Hayes rivers to Pine Island lake (Cumberland). As could be expected, Hearne had more difficulty ascertaining longitude than latitude, and as a result he has increased the east-west distance from York to Cumberland by 4 degrees, while being out only one degree of latitude. Immediately after this house building task was completed, Hearne was appointed Factor at Fort Churchill. (Warkentin and Ruggles.
