is easy to follow its course down-ward. If, on account of fat or thick-ening of the peritoneum, the ureteris not easily seen, a little incisionthrough the peritoneum over thebrim of the pelvis, just inside theovarian vessels, will expose it toview. Inspection is of the utmost valuein examining the lower urinarytract, namely, the urethra andthe bladder, where it forms themost direct and positive method of investigating and diagnosing the diseasesof these organs. Inspection of the Urethra.—Inspection begins at the urethral orifice which,instead of appearing as normal and closed by the little delicate labia of theurethra, may in multipartie appear gaping and red. Sometimes the orifice isfound exposed, everted, shaped like a rosette, and shortened; this is due to am-putation, done under the impression that the patient is suffering from hemor-rhoids ; or there may be a caruncle shaped like a cockscomb protruding fromthe orifice. Enlarged Skenes glandssometimes look like a pea lodged under the mucosa, and the orifice may beeverted. By inspection the bulging of a suburethral abscess into the vagina isplainly visible. Above the external urethral orifice no portion of the urinarytract is visible to the naked eye unaided by instruments. A couple of benthairpins (Fig. 116), grasped by artery forceps, form excellent retractors, ex-posing the outer 1 or 2 cm. of the urethra. The best instrument for inspection
